What is Insomnia?

Insomnia means losing sleep or difficulty in falling asleep. Sleeplessness is especially common among the higher socio economic strata of society today. Insomnia is common among elderly too.

Normally 7-8 hours of undisturbed sleep every night is adequate rest for most people. Some may be refreshed with lesser hours of sleep, say 5-6 hours, if it is an uninterrupted and deep sleep. Insomnia deprives a person of mental rest and interferes with their daytime activities. If this continues for long, it can become a habit and a severe health hazard.

Insomnia Causes

Emotional Disturbances: Mental stress, anxiety, fatigue due to overwork, over excitement, suppressed feelings of anger, jealousy, hatred or brooding over any negative thought are some emotional triggers to a disturbed sleeping pattern. Even worrying about falling asleep can cause insomnia.

Smoking: An unsuspected cause of irregular sleep schedules can be due to smoking which irritates the nerves of the digestive system.

Caffeine: Stimulants like tea, coffee, regular sodas (caffeinated fizzy drinks), some energy drinks contain caffeine. If these are consumed before bedtime or in the late evening, it can cause loss of sleep

Over-eating at night or Skipping Dinner: Abdominal discomfort can arise from stomach disorders such as dyspepsia, constipation, eating a heavy dinner, stuffing yourself with food late at night or skipping dinner altogether for some reason. This can prevent you for a good night’s sleep.

Insomnia Symptoms

Repeated compromised quality and duration of sleep can cause loss of concentration, coordination, memory lapses, unstable emotions, confusion during daytime and persistent changes in sleep patterns.
